Every paver project we build starts with excavation. We dig down past the topsoil, then bring in aggregate and compact it in layers. That base is what carries the load and drains the water.
Water is the enemy in winter. If it sits under the pavers, it freezes, expands, and pushes up. A well-graded, well-compacted base lets water pass through instead of pooling.
The pavers themselves are set on a thin bedding layer and locked together with edge restraint and joint sand. Nothing is glued or mortared, so the surface can flex with the ground and come back.
This is the part of the job that takes the most time and shows the least. It is also the part that decides whether your patio still looks right in fifteen years.
