Block walls are uniform. Each unit is the same size, the courses line up, and the cap gives a clean top edge. Block works well near the house, along a driveway, or anywhere you want a crisp line.
Boulder walls are built from natural stone, each piece set and keyed by hand. They feel like they belong in a wooded or sloped yard, and they get better looking as plants grow in around them.
Both need the same things underneath: a compacted footing, drainage stone and pipe behind the wall, and the right lean back into the slope. Skip those and either style will fail.
